In an attempt to examine the relationship between staff attitudes and behavior toward elderly, 72 staff members from nursing homes who had completed attitude questionnaires were observed with a behavioral observation checklist. These findings shed some light on the relation of attitudes to behavior and affect expression and support studies in other areas which have found no relationship between intended and actual behavior. Reasons for this lack of association and implications for staff training in facilities for the elderly are discussed.
