Elderly Victimization

An Examination Beyond the FBI's Index Crimes

Most of the research on elderly victimization has focused primarily on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI)'s major index crimes of murder, rape, and robbery; however, this restricted approach to the study of crime only depicts a portion of the actual crime against the elderly. This research was conducted to capture a more encompassing view of elderly victimization. The data were obtained from the FBI's National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) in the state of South Carolina. Results of the study suggest that the elderly (age 65 and older) are more at risk than are younger segments of the population for crimes of robbery, intimidation, vandal-ism, and forgery/fraud, with the sex and race of the elderly victim also associated with specific types of criminal victimization.
