The sources of emotional strain experienced by both sibling and spouse caregivers were examined from a role theory perspective. Both spouses and siblings are at risk of emotional strain associated with caregiving. Role demand overload, role conflict, and resources availability variables are important in understanding the impact of caregiving on these oldest caregiving groups; however, the variables had a differential effect on sibling versus spouse caregivers. The quality of the relationship with the care recipient was more salient for siblings. Physical health was more critical to spouses.
